Mens Wedding Bands
January 18th, 2011Men’s wedding bands are often the last thing thought about when planning a wedding. The number of times that I have had the man coming to me a week before the wedding to buy his ring is crazy. Invariably there is a problem. This is strange, because unless the wedding is a last minute decision, the bride to be has her ring planned, designed and made months before. The man storms in and buys whatever fits – he cannot be too choosy about style and the metal he wants. If he is lucky he is dealing with a manufacturing jeweller who can make up a wedding band that he likes in the short time that is left..
I have seen some weird scenes from couples buying rings together – the man has no idea what he wants, but know what he does not want. And the woman knows what she wants for the man, and is quite insistent. It makes for an interesting sales process. The easy way is to agree with the women and let the man end up with something he doesn’t like. The hard way is to make sure the man gets what he likes. This can lead to losing the sale altogether. So a fine balance is needed to make sure the man gets the wedding ring he wants and the woman does not feel offended. The best advice is to give yourselves plenty of time, and to look around – there are thousand of stunning designs out there – you’ve just got to track them down! Men’s wedding bands are available as gold wedding bands, silver wedding rings, palladium wedding rings, platinum wedding bands, titanium wedding rings, and silver rings.
Men, I suggest, if you want the ring that you want, come shopping alone. It will take half the time and you will go home with exactly what you want – you can deal with the fall out later. Remember you will have to wear the wedding ring for the rest of your life. If you choose a titanium ring, remember it cannot be sized. Ask for custom engraving – it is nice to have a wedding date on the inside – if you are like me you will forget your anniversary date – and have to face the consequences!. A simple message that is special for both of you is also a cool idea.
Some classics I have engraved are:
- together forever
- two hearts as one
- eternity symbol
- two hearts beating as one
Be careful not to get too cheesy – although when you are young and in love cheesy does not come up on your radar – so let me not be the judge of that – but a message inside the ring really adds something special to the whole occasion – and makes the ring even more special years down the line. Many couples have little sayings that are special to the two of them – that nobody else will understand – that is the type of message you want.
I have also set diamonds into the inside of the shank – something only the two of you know about – makes it special. Also try and choose a ring that has some kind of meaning to both of you – if you got married in South Africa, or met in Africa, a great idea is to get an African style wedding ring.

Whatever wedding rings you choose – matching, different, your choice, your partners choice or a compromise – make sure that they are well made, that you have a valuation certificate for insurance and that they fit properly. Have them insured the day you pick them up – and get an updated valuation certificate every year – the engagement ring should also be valued – and the diamond should have it’s own certificate stating all the details of the gemstone – like colour, clarity, cut and weight. If you have a wedding ring made up months before hand – check that they still fit before the wedding ceremony – and not the day before – you will battle to find any jeweler that can size a ring in a day – and if they are mens wedding bands made from titanium it is unlikely that they can be sized at all. I have had clients come in the day before in a flat panic because the ring does not fit – not too much of a problem if they are too big – they can still be worn for the ceremony - but too tight and it is a problem.
